Carrier is an exhibition of print media works by Žana Kozomora. A meditation on longing is expressed through a kind of travelogue: the artist revisits her homeland, Bosnia, through the lens of a tourist. Kozomora took an object—an inherited brass coffee grinder—as a starting point, disassembling the parts until she was left with its empty barrel. The weighted metal triggered memories of the thick smell and crackling sound that once emerged from it. In her prints, the artist flattens it, reducing it to a repeated marker of a now largely obsolete object, on pages with no instructions or language for a future user. The pages mark over photographs, windows into particular locations in the greater Sarajevo region that she visited, guided by familial memory, as an initiation into a displaced cultural sphere. These places are preserved to house a national and cultural identity upheld by tourism: the guarded landscape, the museum, and the centuries-old market. For an artist who works through collected materials and metaphor, the nostalgic object acts as a carrier: a documentation of a vanishing, intangible gesture and an ambiguous future.
